Created to celebrate the Dia de los Muertos festival, "The Spirit Dances" incorporates colors and symbols particular to the holiday. The pink fabric and backdrop depict joy at remembering loved ones now passed away. Yellow marigolds play ,an important part in the festival's ofrendas (ritual offerings), symbolizing the brevity of life. Lastly, brightly colored sugar skulls in the background represent departed souls in the circle of life.  This image began as a photograph and over several months became a painterly composite through the magic of digital art.

The Goddess Series

A goddess depicted on a Greek urn resounds from this image of a flawless young woman captured in the act of wrapping a long amber scarf around herself. The circular flow of the composition is classical in nature, and the sense of motion revealed contributes to the creation of a powerful image.

A translucent young woman curves her body alongside a swath of diaphanous blue fabric that takes on the appearance of a blue sea, an infinite organic entity that represents the fluidity of life. She appears as a goddess entwined in the nourishing liquid of Earth’s waters.

As elusive as the passage of time, a spirit barely glimpsed through a teal veil twirls around and around, creating a sense of motion and magic.

Rapture is an expression of passion, bliss, delight, euphoria. This particular model was a new mother and exuded that ephemeral sense of beauty belonging to women who have brought forth new life to our world. Something about her face belonged to an old soul, as if a goddess from antiquity. I created the soft, dreamy atmosphere of this piece by digitally painting over the original photograph, employing mixer brushes to blend together colors, lines and shadows. The result is a unique, painterly depiction akin to a painting.

Where do our thoughts wander while sleepwalking? Where does our conscience travel to while dreaming? These thoughts occupied my mind while photographing the model depicted here in a natural light studio above Union Square in Manhattan. I asked the model to wrap herself in a long swath of transparent blue silky fabric and move around the studio as she pleased. In this image, she is deliberately moving towards an unknown destination outside the boundaries of this composition, as a goddess magnetically driven towards a specific place, sleepwalking to her own destiny.

The sense of a sandglass, of fleeting time, comes through in this image of a classical Goddess tilting her face toward the light. Follow the light areas of her face down towards her shoulder to visualize the shape of a sandglass, surrounded by the deep purple of shadowy weight. The piece comes across as more painting than photograph via soft lines and hues created by digitally painting over the image with mixer brushes.

The Goddess Series began as a photo shoot in a natural light studio up above Union Square in NY.  I captured a number of beautiful, dreamy images using differing combinations of slow speed and wide aperture, then digitally painted over every inch of each image with various mixer brushes. The result is a series of unique, painterly compositions that capture the magic and mystery of ancient goddesses. The series is currently exhibited at the Inspirations gallery in Naples, FL.
